Commissioning

Portraits are a living presence.

They command a room.  They tell their story.

And live forever.

All my portraits are created from photographs, usually a headshot, supplied to me by my clients.  So if you’re interested in commissioning a portrait I will need a photo of the person, or people, you want celebrated in this way.  If you want two people in the same portrait you can choose a separate photo for each person. Photos are returned to you in the exact same condition I receive them.  If feasible you can simply email them to me.

Photographs can be of the living or of the deceased. The photo can be professionally taken or it can be a candid snapshot.  It can be in black and white or in color. It can vary in condition and size.  And the photo can be from any time in the person’s life, enabling your portrait to reflect the exact time you want yourself or others commemorated.

The most important thing about the photograph you choose is that you like the expression on the person’s face. Everything else including hair, lighting or clothing can all be changed. If the photo you select depicts the person with a big smile, showing teeth, their portrait will be one that captures the moment.  If the photo reflects a more subdued look, their portrait will have a posed-for appearance.

Let’s say the photograph you select is of the face only, but you want your portrait to show the person in half-length, or three-quarter length, or full-length.  You can have that.  Let’s say you have a photo showing the person sitting or standing, but you want your portrait to show the person sitting or standing in a different way, or wearing different clothing.  You can have that.  Your vision, your portrait.

How can these extreme changes be made?  In Artist’s Statement I explain more about the unique approach I developed, as a result of combining my years of experience as a fashion illustrator with portraiture.  All the three-quarter and full-length portraits in Gallery were done from headshots only.  If you click on the portrait and scroll down you will see their reference photos.

Portrait Details

All my work is in mixed media: watercolors, colored pencils and India ink on Stonehenge paper that has been permanently bonded to 3/16 inch thick foam board.  Finished portraits are sturdy on their own and can be hung without frames.  If you wish to have them framed they fit easily into frames and need no glass.  All portraits are varnished for protection from light and are glare-free.

Prices, which are a variable depending on the size of the portrait and the number of people in it, are available upon request.
